چکیده

L eptospirosis is a worldwide zoonotic disease caused by infection with the spirochete bacterium Leptospira inteTragons.L. interrogans is further divided on the basis of antigenic relatedness into serogroupsand serovars. Approximately 200 different serovars of L. interrogans have been identified, and within a geographic region, certain serovars are prevalent and becomeadapted to a particular maintenance host. In the United States, the serovars of L. interrogans most commonly associated with leptospirosis in swine are bratislava, pomona, and grippotyphosa. Serovars icterohaemorrhagiae, canicola, and hardjo are also occasionally found in swine.

Comparison of Two ELISA Methods for the Laboratory Diagnosis of Acute Leptospirosis

Background: Leptospirosis is the most common zoonosis widespread in tropical and temperate countries with low social-economic status. We aimed to compare an ELISA kit with an in-house ELISA assay to test the serum samples of the patients who were suspicious of leptospirosis according to their clinical symptoms. Methods: A total of 282 serum samples of patients suspicious of leptospirosis admitt...

Evidence of leptospirosis in the kidneys and serum of feral swine (Sus scrofa) in the United States.

Leptospirosis is the most widespread zoonosis in humans worldwide. In the United States, widespread detection of antibodies to leptospirosis have been identified in feral swine (Sus scrofa) with the highest detection of serovars, Bratislava, Icterohaemorrhagiae, and Pomona. Over the past few years, feral swine populations have expanded their geographical range and distribution in the United Sta...

Reproductive Disorders and Leptospirosis: A Case Study in a Mixed-Species Farm (Cattle and Swine)

Animal leptospirosis, exempt in rodents, manifests as peculiar biology where the animal can function, simultaneously or not, as a susceptible host or reservoir. In the first case, clinical symptoms are likely. In the second case, infection is subclinical and manifestations are mild or absent. Mild clinical symptoms encompass reproductive failure in production animals for host-adapted Leptospira...

Serological and bacteriological diagnosis, and reproductive consequences of an outbreak of porcine leptospirosis caused by a member of the Pomona serogroup

Serological and bacteriological tests were conducted, and productive performance monitored from the start of the outbreak in June 1984 until February 1987 (32 months). During the initial acute stage the titres of agglutinating antibody to serovar pomona ranged from 1:800 to 1:25,600. Among 206 pregnant females, 39 (18.93%) aborted, and the rate of stillbirths was higher than normal. Four strain...

Efficacy of leptospiral commercial vaccines on the protection against an autochtonous strain recovered in Brazil.

In swine and bovines, leptospirosis prevention and control is carried out via vaccination of susceptible animals using bacterins. However, the efficiency of leptospirosis vaccines has been questioned. This work aimed to investigate the potency of five leptospirosis vaccines sold commercially in Brazil, challenging the animals with one autochthonous strain of Leptospira, Canicola serovar, denote...
